Foothill Notes

Foothill Notes is an annual literary meet organised by a small team of book enthusiasts under the aegis of Café the Twins in Siliguri. It is a one-of-its-kind event in the calendar of the city celebrating literature coming from this part of the world, which otherwise remains largely unexplored and underrepresented in the larger literary landscape of India. This event provides a much-needed platform for writers, poets, and literary enthusiasts from North Bengal and the Northeast to come together, share their work, and engage in meaningful conversations about literature, culture, and society. Foothill Notes aims to promote and preserve the rich cultural heritage of the region, foster a sense of community among book lovers, and inspire a new generation of writers and readers to explore and celebrate the unique stories and perspectives of this region. Foothill Notes creates a vibrant and inclusive space for literature to thrive, making it a cherished event in the city's cultural calendar.   

Objectives

  • To promote and celebrate literature: Highlight the significance of literature in enriching our culture and specifically from North Bengal, Sikkim and the Northeast, particularly writings in English.
  • Support Writers: Offer a platform for authors readers, and literary enthusiasts to connect and share their passion for literature. 
  • Engage the Community: Foster and create a vibrant literary community through diverse literary activities that showcase the region’s unique voice.
  • Foster Literary Discussions: Encourage dialogue on literary themes and issues to energise and synergise emerging writers to write on issues by connecting them to established writers of the region.


Activities

  • Author Readings : Featuring notable authors and poets of the region.
  • Panel Discussions : Engaging discussions on contemporary literary issues.
  • Workshops : Interactive sessions on writing books and graphic novels and publishing.
  • Book-Corner : To sell books at special discounts (author signed) and create a space for authors to sell their books.

  • Promoting writings in English from North Bengal, Sikkim and the North-East India or Authors who have written books about the region. 
  • Showcasing local talent in Arts and Cuture of the region. Exploring themes relevant to the region, such as Identity, History, Geopolitics, Culture, and Environment for discussion.
